Smart Climate Legislation Will Protect the Environment and Consumers

At PNM, we believe climate change is the most pressing energy, environmental and economic challenge of our time. How we address it will affect our quality of life for generations to come.

PNM and its parent company, PNM Resources, are proud to have been early supporters of comprehensive, federal climate change legislation. The right policy will:

• Achieve long term meaningful reductions of greenhouse gas emissions,
• Spur needed investment in no- and low-carbon energy producing technologies, and
• Include cost containment protections to minimize increased costs for consumers and allow energy companies to continue providing reliable service.

In the United States, greenhouse gas regulation is inevitable. The Supreme Court has directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. But we need legislation to make sure that costs are kept as low as possible while still achieving reductions.

The U.S. House of Representatives showed courage and leadership in
passing the American Clean Energy Security Act, an imperfect but good
bill. We are working hard with our partners, including the Edison Electric
Institute and the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, to help advance
federal climate legislation in the U.S. Senate.

and long-term repercussions for the U.S. economy and American
